HURRICANE UPDATE as of 06-01-11
There is no "serious" hurricane activity at present.  For those unaware, the list of hurricane names is recycled every six years which means 2011 is using the names from 2005.  You will notice that the named storms Katrina, Rita and Wilma, who arrived in 2005, have been retired after their devastation.  Let us pray that we do not add any names to the retired list during 2011.
From NOAA - Across the entire Atlantic Basin for the six-month season, which begins June 1, 1011 NOAA is predicting the following ranges this year:  12 to 18 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which: 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including: 3 to 6 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher).  Each of these ranges has a 70% likelihood, and indicate that activity will exceed the seasonal average of 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.  “The United States was fortunate last year. Winds steered most of the season’s storms and  hurricanes away from our coastlines,” according to NOAA.
From CSU – Our information indicates that the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will have significantly more activity than the average 1950-2000 season. We estimate that 2011 will have about 9 hurricanes (average is 5.9), 16 named storms (average is 9.6), 80 named storm days (average is 49.1), 35 hurricane days (average is 24.5), 5 major (Category 3-4-5) hurricanes (average is 2.3) and 10 major hurricane days (average is 5.0). The probability of major hurricane landfall is estimated at about 140 percent of the long-period average.
