| Only six Atlantic hurricanes are likely to form this summer according to Phil Klotzbach and William Gray, forecasters at Colorado State University. Twelve named tropical storms will form in the Atlantic Basin—which includes the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea—during hurricane season. That's down from the average of 17 named storms seen in each of the past five summers. Of those dozen storms, six will develop into hurricanes, which have sustained winds of at least 74 mph. They suspect two of the storms will become major hurricanes, which have winds faster than 110 mph. The meteorologists base their forecast on cooler water temperatures in the Atlantic.

The list below contains the names of the hurricanes predicted for SW Florida during the 2009 season. A line through the Storm means it was a non-event "locally" for which we are all grateful. The other storms, when applicable, will have their own links to our photos of the events. For information during a storm please click on Collier County Emergency Management, NOAA, Satellite Link, StormPulse, Weather Underground or AccuWeather In the event of a serious disaster, the Red Cross provides a site that allows you to verify that family members or friends are safe. My hope is that we never need to access this site.
